An Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) is a six-digit number that prevents someone else from filing a tax return using your Social Security number. If you wish to get an IP PIN and you don’t already have an account on IRS.gov, you must register to validate your identity. You may also request an IP PIN online at /getanippin. The fastest way to receive an IP PIN is by using the IRS online Get an IP PIN tool. You may submit this form to apply for an IP PIN, if you (1) have a Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), (2) have an annual adjusted gross income of equal to or less than 72,000 and (3) have access to a telephone. Spouses and dependents are eligible for an IP PIN if they can pass the identity verification process. You must pass an identity verification process. If you want to request an IP PIN, please note: If you don’t already have an IP PIN, you may get an IP PIN as a proactive step to protect yourself from tax-related identity theft. You don't need to enter an IP PIN for your dependent (s) when filing a paper tax return.
